14: Cassie

Cassie was amazed by the amount of attention she received at school the day after the trial. Girls who a few weeks before wouldn’t have given her the time of day were falling all over each other to hear her story. A small crowd formed around the table where she ate lunch with Stephanie, and they had to recount the details of the trial at least three times as new people came up to find out what was going on.

When the dismissal bell rang at the end of the day, Cassie kept her head down to discourage passersby from stopping her on the way to the parking lot. She climbed into the passenger seat of Stephanie’s SUV and let out a sigh of relief.

“What a crazy day,” said Stephanie.

“I’m glad it’s over,” said Cassie. “How long do you think it will be like this?”

“Hopefully not long. I got invited to three different parties this weekend.”

Cassie gave Stephanie a confused look. “Isn’t that a good thing?”

“Well each of the girls who invited me started the conversation by saying, ‘Hey, you’re the one who was on the news, right?’ They don’t want me at their party. They want a conversation piece. So I politely declined.”

Cassie laughed as they pulled out of the parking lot. “Did any of them even know your name?”

“Not a one.” Stephanie smiled and turned on the radio, tuning it to a pop station she always listened to when they were driving. “Are we picking up Hector?”

“He said he’d meet us there.”

They drove to Mrs. Ferguson’s office, occasionally singing along with the radio when they knew the words. Cassie was glad to see Stephanie acting so carefree after how depressed she’d been over the last few months. She was more like her old self, and Cassie hoped it meant she was getting back to normal.

Hector wasn’t waiting in front of the building this time, so they went inside and down the hall to Mrs. Ferguson’s office. He was sitting in one of the chairs in front of her desk when they walked in. Mrs. Ferguson jumped up and rushed around the desk to give them each a hug.

“I’m so glad you could come,” she said. “Wait here a moment. I need to get something from the kitchen.”

They both gave Hector a questioning look, but he only shrugged and moved over so they could take the seats beside him. When Mrs. Ferguson came back, she had a tray with a glass bottle and four tall, thin glasses.

“Normally at a time like this, I’d break out the champagne,” said Mrs. Ferguson, “but since you’re all underage, we’ll have to stick with sparkling cider.”

She pulled the wrapping off the top and pressed with her thumb. The cork exploded from the end of the bottle and ricocheted off a ceiling tile, disappearing behind one of the shelves. She held the bottle over a trashcan to catch what bubbled over. When it had settled, she poured four glasses and handed them out.

“Cheers!” they all said as they clinked the champagne flutes together and each took a sip.
